Interested in creative writing? Never feel represented in what you read?

Informal and fun, this session gives you the essential tools for creative writing. We will look at the fundamentals of storytelling, creating a real-life character and dialogue, read extracts from published writers, and, of course, write!

We invite people from a migrant or international background to take part. Maybe you are already writing, or you just fancy giving it a go, all levels from complete beginners to more experienced writers are welcome! Your English doesn’t need to be perfect, but a good understanding is needed (helpful) to ensure you get the most from the workshops.

Who is it for?

This workshop is for people from refugee, migrant, asylum seeker, or international backgrounds. We are running a further session on Friday 24 June, which you are also welcome to attend if you would like to. If so, please book for both workshops.

Travel costs of up to £2/workshop are available to ensure access. Please contact us if you’d like more information, or simply bring your ticket/receipt to the session to be reimbursed.

About the workshop leaders

IMPART has been generously supported by the Baring Foundation to provide a year-long training and development programme under its Creatively Minded and Ethnically Diverse strand. Emerging writers are being mentored by more experienced ones in how to run creative writing workshops. In this instance, George is being mentored by Akila and they, in turn, are both co-leading the workshop.

About Georgina Aboud

Georgina is of Lebanese and Anglo-Irish heritage. She lives in Brighton, where she works as a freelance writer. Much of her working life has been spent in international development focusing on gender, climate change, and food security. Through this work and others, Georgina has been lucky enough to work all over the world including observing elections in Kosovo and Ukraine, collaborating with forest and mountain communities in India and Colombia, working on briefing papers in Bangladesh as well as pulling pints in Peru. Georgina has also worked as a carer, a TV and film extra and a dog sitter. Georgina was published under Creative Future’s Spotlight Books imprint. She is currently working on a novel and a collection of poems.

About Akila Richards

Akila is an award-winning writer and spoken word artist, performing and collaborating inter/nationally in different settings. Her portfolio includes coaching and mentoring, commissions across artistic genres and creating culturally creative events; currently as Artist in House for ‘Rest My Resistance’ at Brighton Dome, and producing a range of new work. Her poems and short stories have been published by Penguin, Peepal Tree Press, Creative Future, Waterloo Press, Covert Magazine and in a range of audio online performances. She is due to publish her first poetry pamphlet and is editing her first novel.
