Creative Writing – Snapshots (NORWICH)

FREE creative writing workshops for people who lack opportunities due to mental health issues, disability, identity or other social circumstance.

Come to as many as you wish – all offer something different.

We are running six workshops in Norwich, 10.30am-12.30pm on the following dates:

  • 17 March – Session 1: Snapshots
  • 31 March – Session 2: Object Lesson
  • 14 April – Session 3: Nature (Trees)
  • 28 April – Session 4: Nature (Weather)
  • 12 May – Session 5: Nature: (Space)
  • 26 May – Session 6: Coming Home

Please note, we only need you to book on one of the six sessions, but you can attend all sessions if you choose. 

 

Session one – Snapshots

  • Introductions and feedback guidelines
  • Working in pairs, students will select from a random group of images which they will observe and discuss. Each one of the pair will develop a character from their image, thinking about facial expression, body language, setting etc.
  • Break
  • Writing exercise: a short story or poem about your character, based on a question posed by the tutor. Readings and feedback.

About the tutor

Sarah Bower is a novelist and short story writer. She has taught creative writing for many years, in settings as various as sheltered accommodation for the elderly in Norwich to Lingnan University in Hong Kong. She also manages the Escalator and Emerging Translator Mentoring Schemes for the National Centre for Writing. Her fiction has been translated into ten languages. Her first novel, The Needle in the Blood, won the Susan Hill Award in 2007. Her short fiction has been published in magazines and anthologies and been read on BBC radio. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia where she was shortlisted for the Curtis Brown scholarship for 2001/2002.

Help is available with travel costs–please indicate this when booking. We can provide up to £5 per session for those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend.

This is offered on a first come, first served basis up to a limited amount. You’ll need to bring a receipt/ticket to the session and be reimbursed on the day. Contact us if you have any questions.
