Stewpot Rescues by Ireti Coker.
Born in Lagos to an English mother and Nigerian father, Ireti spent her early childhood in suburban Lagos before finishing her education at an English school in Dorset. Perhaps because of this dual existence, Ireti is able to cast an observational eye over her childhood memories. The stories in Stewpot Rescues fizz with sensual local detail; the sights, sounds and smells of Lagos and the Nigerian countryside are writ large, transporting the reader fully into busy markets, the Cokers’ plentiful garden, and the Nigerian bush. These two stories represent a mere taste of Ireti’s vast collection of tales.
